Spire’s First Three Boulder-Built Satellites Launch for Defense Customer

Spire says its Colorado site combines satellite development, manufacturing, integration and testing. The launch gives prospective customers a specific U.S.-built flight milestone to assess.

Spire Global says the first three satellites built at its Boulder facility launched October 1 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission for an unnamed national-security and defense customer. For the Virginia-headquartered company, it is the first reported launch of hardware manufactured at its Colorado site.

That matters to organizations assessing U.S.-built spacecraft: Spire can now point to a customer flight involving Boulder-made satellites, rather than a manufacturing-capacity claim alone. NASA reported that Transporter-18 launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on October 1. Spire is the source identifying its three spacecraft as part of the mission.

What the Boulder site does

In its October 2 announcement, Spire said the Boulder facility brings satellite development, manufacturing, integration and testing under one roof. The launch gives that production work a specific result: three spacecraft built there were carried on a customer mission.

Spire did not name the customer or disclose a contract price or the spacecraft’s specifications. Its announcement reports a launch, not results from an operating satellite service.

A new production milestone

Spire’s 2025 annual filing, submitted March 19, said satellite production was then primarily concentrated at one U.K. facility. The Boulder-built launch adds a specific U.S. result to that earlier production picture.

CEO Theresa Condor said Spire’s facilities in the U.S., U.K. and Europe have combined capacity to produce 300 to 400 satellites annually. That is a company-stated capacity across sites, not Boulder’s annual output or a count of completed spacecraft. For customers considering domestic production, the immediate milestone is narrower and concrete: Spire says three satellites made at its Boulder facility have launched.
